Today, service to others is not something a great many of
us think about. Few churches and outreach groups advocate or provide
missionary work. Or maybe we just don't hear about them.
So, President Obama is expanding national service programs
like AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps, and building a Classroom Corps to help
teachers help kids.
He's asking all middle school and high school students to
volunteer 50 hours of community service a year. All college students who
complete 100 hours of community service will receive a fully refundable tax
credit ensuring them that the first $4000 of their college education is
completely free.
And retired Americans are being asked to put their
knowledge and experience back to work. More ideas and more programs are
needed for the retired and for the young.
Let's all do our part.
